Full & New moons 2026

According to tradition Ashtanga yoga (asana practice) is practised six days a week, with one day off on Saturday or Sunday. In addition rest is taken on full and new moon days. This is because yoga in India was traditionally taught by the Brahmin caste. Members of this caste are required to perform special rituals, "pooja", at the full and new moon, and therefore teaching was historically paused on these days. According to Vedic astrology, there is also a particularly strong energy at the full and new moon, which might have a negative impact on one's physical yoga practice. Of course, everyone chooses when to practice, but when asana is done daily, rest days are especially important for proper recovery and the extra biweekly "moon days" are welcome for that reason. The other limbs (aspects) of Ashtanga yoga can still be practiced while taking physical rest.
